Limaland, Waynesfield play host to Non-Wing Double Down weekend

LIMA — Anybody familiar with 360 sprint car racing knows how important the wings are on the car. What a lot of people don’t know is that there is also another sprint car division that competes at a high level. The Non-Wing Sprints division is that other division and they invade Limaland Motorsports Park tonight. The K&N Filter Modifieds and the Bud Thunderstocks will also be competing tonight at the 82nd Anniversary Race – presented by Menke Brothers Construction. The pit gate opens at 4:30 p.m. and racing kicks off at 7:30 p.m.

One of those Non-Wing Sprint drivers is someone who is familiar with competing at Limaland. Pleasant Hill native, Luke Hall, has been racing for 15 years. He spends most of his time racing at Waynesfield Raceway Park, but he used to compete in the 360 “wing” sprints at Limaland.

“I love the non wing stuff a lot,” Hall said. “There’s a lot of ways to look at it. You can do more as a driver. You can make a fifth place car win. With the winged division, it’s more of a setup and money thing. Now the experience that you get with the winged division is phenomenal. The guys who race are tougher.”

Hall is looking forward to returning to Limaland tonight with the other Non Wing Sprint racers.

“Limaland makes the track raceable,” Hall said. “They keep it wet and heavy in spots. Drivers have a good cushion and can make stuff happen.”

Hall stumbled upon Non-Wing Sprints in and unconventional way.

“It’s a funny story because Bob Snead told me to buy a car and he’d power it,” Hall said. I took all of my money and bought a car. Bob said he’d take it in and straighten it up. Well after three or four months it wasn’t done. I finally went to check on it. I was looking for my car and I couldn’t find it. Then I noticed this beautiful car with my patches on it. It was totally rebuilt. A new motor, new tires, it was great. I was in tears and ready to race. He gave me a shot and I went from there.”

Hall, who has won two consecutive championships at Waynesfield Raceway Park, wants to accomplish something special this year.

“Nobody’s won three championships in a row,” Hall said. “I’m blessed to race for John and Ron Nelson. They are spot on with everything and give a lot of effort. I am also proud to race for Site X Inc., PPC, Hawk Chassis, Quest Credit Union, G.H. Bierly Well Drilling Inc., and Nelson Design & Fabrication. I just do what I can for those guys.”
