Grand Lake eliminated from playoffs

CELINA — Grand Lake was unable to recover from a 9-0 deficit as Licking County advanced to play the Lima Locos with an 11-4 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League victory Tuesday night.

The best-of-three series between the Locos and Settlers will begin at 7:05 tonight at Simmons Field.

Nikolas Zouras (Illinois State) had two home runs and three RBI, Tyler Paulsen (Illinois State) homered and Tyler Schmidt (Seminole State College) doubled for the Mariners.

Also on Tuesday night, the host Hamilton Joes defeated the Cincinnati Steam 3-1 to advance to play Xenia.

Top pitcher

Lima — The Lima Locos’ Connor Curlis (Ohio State) has been named the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League’s Pitcher of the Year and Top Pitching Prospect.

Curless, who played for Findlay High School, finished the regular season with a 6-0 record and 1.04 ERA. He allowed 25 hits and 16 walks while striking out 39 in 43 1/3 innings of work.

UNOH assistant

LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio has hired former Milwaukee Brewers prospect Brian Garman as its new pitching coach.

“I am very excited that we were able to hire Brian as our new pitching coach,” UNOH Head Coach Kory Hartman said in a news release. “I feel very confident that we made the right decision not only for our program, but for our university. Brian is a local coach who understands UNOH and the purpose of our efforts.”

Garman, a Wapakoneta High School graduate, attended the University of Cincinnati. As a four-year letter winner for the Bearcats, he made 63 appearances, including 26 starts on the mound. During his senior season, he struck out a single-season personal best 65 batters and walked 19. He also had the eighth-best earned run average (3.79) in the Big East that season. He was named third team all-Big East and was selected in the 17th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft by the Brewers, playing in 2013 for AA Huntsville of the Southern League before tearing his labrum in June of that season.

Clark at state

LANCASTER — Bath graduate Camden Clark will be a member of the Sidney Post 217 team playing in the state American Legion tournament which begins today. Sidney will be opening the tournament at Beavers Field with a 10 a.m. game against the Toledo Post 553 Hawks.

Triathlon on Sunday

LIMA — Residents and motorists in eastern Allen County are advised that the annual YMCA Triathlon will be Sunday. Bikers will be on the road from 8:15 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. with traffic heaviest around 8:45 a.m. Bikers will be on State Route 81 and Slabtown, Dixie, Sugar Creek, Swaney and Sandusky roads.

Scholarship golf event

HARROD — The 17th annual Rhodes State Tee Off for Scholarships is 8 a.m. Friday at Colonial Golfers Club, 10985 Harding Highway (State Route 309).

New to the Tee Off this year is an online auction. The auction is accessible through RhodesState.edu with items donated by area businesses and organizations. It will remain open for bids to 11 a.m. Friday.
