Winners crowned at Elks Invitational Tournament of Champions

The Lima Junior Golf Association capped off its season with the Elks Invitational Tournament of Champions at Shawnee Country Club Monday.

Carson Harmon, after defeating Britton Hall with a birdie in the first playoff hole, garnered first place in the boys 12-13 division. Harmon and Hall both shot 44 for their rounds. Solomon Smith took third place with a score of 45 and Bryce Cobb placed fourth with a 46. Jack Gerker rounded out the top five with a score of 48.

In the boys 14-15 division, Christian Nartker took top honors with a score of 85. Adam Gerker was the runner-up by posting an 88 and Austin Ratcliff rounded out the top three with a score of 89.

Logan Miller’s 77 edged Aaron Belcher by one stroke to finish first in the boys 16-18 division. Belcher shot a 78 and was followed in third place by Kayne Richardson with a 79. Also shooting a 79 was Anthony Mckee and Spencer Stubbs came in with an 80 to round out the top five.

Erin Mulcahy won the girls 15 and under division after she defeated Mary Kelly Mulcahy in a playoff. Both players shot a 44. Grace Miller placed third with a 46.

In the girls 16-18, Jill Schmitmeyer defeated Megan Spainhower for top honors. Schmitmeyer posted an 84 and Spainhower shot a 99.

Lima Senior to hold meeting

Lima Senior Athletics will be providing free physicals and conducting an Ohio High School Athletic Association parents meeting on July 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lima Senior High School. The meeting and physicals are available to any athlete grades 7 – 12 who will be participating in athletics for the 2016-2017 school year. A parent or legal guardian must be in attendance. Physical packets are available in the Lima Senior Athletic Office, Lima Senior Main office and West Middle School main office. Questions or concerns please contact 419-996-3050.

Columbus Grove to hold meeting

Columbus Grove High School will hold its mandatory OHSAA preseason parent/athlete meeting on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gym. All parents and athletes in grades 7-12 should make plans to attend. There will be a general meeting for everyone and then breakout sessions for each sport following the general meeting. The entire evening should take about 45 minutes. If you have questions call Terry Schnipke at 659-4331.

ONU volleyball earns AVCA Team Academic Award

ADA — The Ohio Northern volleyball team was named an Team Academic Award winner for 2015-16 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The Polar Bears were one of 762 teams nationwide to earn the honor.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

This marks the sixth consecutive year and the 12th time overall that Ohio Northern has won the award.

The Polar Bears welcome back four starters and seven letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 24-6 overall and finished second in the Ohio Athletic Conference with an 8-1 record last year under 26th-year head coach Kate Witte.
