Purdue smothers UNOH in exhibition game

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — University of Northwestern Ohio wasn’t able to keep up with Big Ten Purdue.

But it was still a rare opportunity for UNOH men’s basketball to meet No. 23-ranked Purdue in an exhibition game Sunday at Mackey Arena.

Purdue pulled away in the second half with a 92-43 victory over UNOH. The Racers are ranked No. 17 in the NAIA Division II poll.

“This is an opportunity for our kids that they will remember for the rest of their lives,” UNOH coach Chris Adams said. “I liked the way we came out of the chute. We really did some good things early. For us to have success, we are going to have to eliminate the ‘bonehead’ turnovers that we committed in today’s game. When we evaluate the game file, I feel like we can take some positives out of this opportunity and move on and get ready for Aquinas (at 3 p.m. Saturday at UNOH).”

UNOH was led by Lawrence Jackson’s 18 points. Beatty scored eight points. Ziar Anderson had six rebounds.

Elida grad Dakota Mathias had eight points and seven assists for Purdue. He was 3 of 6 from the field and 2 of 5 on 3-pointers.

Purdue was led by Vince Edwards and Isaac Haas, who both had 18 points. Haas had eight rebounds. Kendall Stephens had 13 points. Caleb Swanigan had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

UNOH grabbed a 14-13 lead on a 3-pointer from Beatty with 11:58 to go in the opening half. The Boilermakers then went on a 25-5 run to take complete control.

The Racers struggled to shoot the ball in the second half, and Purdue pulled away to the exhibition victory.

Purdue shot 48.5 percent from the field, while UNOH shot 27 percent. Purdue was 9 of 29 on 3-pointers, while the Racers hit 8 of 25.

Purdue won the rebounding battle, 45-34. UNOH made 23 turnovers, while the Boilermakers had nine.

Purdue’s Mathias has 8 points, 7 assists
