BATH TOWNSHIP – Forty-seven golfers teed it up in the open flights at Hawthorne Hills as the Lima City Men’s Golf Championship got underway Wednesday and the best in the open flights were B.J. McPheron, with a one-under-par 71 and Scott Conrad with a 73.

Jason Carpenter, Chris Inskeep and Paul Masters Jr. all shot 74.

The overall low round of the day, though, came out of the senior championship flight, where Tim Windau shot a 66 at the Bluffton Golf Club.

Windau birdied his first three holes, had five birds on the front nine and finished with seven of them. His only bogey came on the fourth hole.

Dan Garlock and Ted Keysor shot 72 for the low rounds in the super senior flight and Mike Stewart and Kirk Slusher were low in the senior open flight at 78.

The first, second and third flights are scheduled to begin match play at Colonial Golfers Club today. The senior championship, senior open and super seniors flights will play at Hawthorne Hills.

The championship flight, which did not play on Wednesday, is scheduled for 18 holes of medal play this morning and its opening round of match play in the afternoon at Hidden Creek Golf Club.

McPheron was at five-under par standing on the 16th tee only to finish bogey, bogey, double-bogey. But he remained upbeat about his play.

“If you had told me this morning I would shoot 71 I would have been happy,” McPheron said.” I’m a little disappointed with the finish but I played really solid the first 15 holes.”

McPheron hit the ball close and putted well.

“I shot three-under 33 on the front nine and it seemed like all my iron shots were a perfect number for me.” McPheron said. “I hit the ball in the right spots and was able to roll in some putts, plus I birdied the first three par threes.”

“I missed four or five 5-foot putts that I just left short,” Conrad said. “I had many good looks at birdie and the course was in fantastic shape but we had to play lift, clean, and place.”

Masters is looking forward to the opening of match play.

“I hit the driver good and got it up and down as my putter came through.” he said. “I made four birdies and look forward to match play.”

Inskeep was pleased with his round that he defined as conservative.

“I hit three wood of a lot of tees and that did me well until I double bogeyed number 18,” Inskeep said. “I hit the ball solid all day and didn’t make any putts until the back nine.”

The flight breakdown was 80 or better to make the first flight, 86 or better to qualify for the second flight, and 86 and up in the third flight. The first and second flights both came down to tie-breakers for the final spots.
