Koza: June a time for some memories of Dad and some golf

It’s been a good week and a tough week!

Does that make any sense?

Good in that I got a chance to go to the Indians’ game last Thursday and enjoyed a good Father’s Day at home.

Tough in that Father’s Day reminded me of my father and this week happens to be the five-year anniversary of his death.

I loved going to Indians’ games with my dad.

The last Indians’ game we went together was in Cincinnati in 2007-the day before I was inducted into the Ohio Associated Press Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame.

The Indians won in extra innings versus the Reds that night.

Loved it!

That was Dad’s last Indians’ game in person, although we talked Indians often in our conversations up until he died in 2010.

Did you know it was five years ago June 23 when I got the news that Dad had succumbed to pancreatic cancer?

And did you know that it was five years ago June 15, 2010 when I was playing in the Wilson Sporting Goods golf outing, that I had gotten a call from Dad, and knowing he was about to die, he wanted to say goodbye to me?

Talk about a tough day then.

Ugh!

Dad would pass eight days later.

And how about this irony?

It was this past Tuesday when I played in the Wilson Sporting Goods outing again on June 23.

Talk about a day full of emotions.

It was only the second time that I had played golf in more than two years, yet I was so happy to be a part of a wonderful outing.

But, also thinking about my father that day, and what took place five years to the day made it tough.

Good and tough.

This past Father’s Day, I thought about Dad, too.

You know, I don’t think I appreciated him enough.

Too late now, but he was a great dad.

I sure wish he was still here for me to say that to him.

I can tell you that I really appreciate Father’s Day now, being a dad, being a proud Dad of twin daughters.

I thank the good Lord for being able to be a Dad.

And being a Dad for the past 22 years.

And I want to be around for at least the next 22 years.

Hopefully more.

And I thank God for giving me a great dad.

If your dad is still around, give him a big hug.

And if you can’t hug him, call him.

I can’t do that now, but I can still hug my daughters.

Miss you, Dad!

OTHER KOZA THOUGHTS:

*Speaking of the Indians-tough to watch for sure. Finally got their first walk-off win of the year last Sunday, but when they fall behind they usually lose.

And when the opponents go to the bullpen they immediately bring in a left-hander. The Indians are so lefty dominant. And right now they aren’t hitting left-handers very well. Actually, they don’t hit right-handed pitching well either. You can’t fire the whole team so I would fire the hitting coaches. There are actually two of them.

Kansas City did that last year and they went to the World Series. And Seattle just changed their hitting coach. Hey it can’t hurt, right?

*Hope you are listening to Sportstalk with Koza this summer and our latest 30-in-30 feature-top 30 plus Limaland boys’ basketball players over the past 30 years. It’s quite a list. We are so blessed to have such great athletes in our area! #23 is tonight on Sportsradio 93.1 The Fan.
