UNOH’s Alvarez

signs with Rangers

LIMA — University of Northwestern Ohio catcher Jhonniel Alvarez has signed a free agent contract with the Texas Rangers.

The loss of Alvarez does provide a stumbling block for the Racers on the field, as UNOH has now lost all three catchers from their 2014 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship team, but Hartman is still happy for Alvarez to get the chance to continue to pursue his baseball career at the next level.

“Jhonniel had a great year for us, both offensively and defensively and is very deserving of this opportunity,” coach Kory Hartman said in a news release. “He does a lot of things well on the baseball field, but Jhonniel is a young man who has prioritized his life off the field. He is a very mature player who has shown a tireless work ethic to get better, both in the classroom and on the field. I could not be happier for him and his family. He will be hard to replace, but I feel confident between the catchers we have in the program and those that we are bringing in, we should be very competitive in that position again this fall.”

Alvarez played one season for the Racers. He appeared in 44 games for UNOH, hitting .350, belting 12 doubles and four homers and driving in 38 runs. Behind the plate, he fielded .981, earning the WHAC’s Gold Glove Award for the catcher position. Alvarez will report to the Arizona Summer League Rangers, the rookie level affiliate of the Texas Rangers, based in Surprise, Arizona.
