Reds option Jumbo Diaz, promote Adcock

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds optioned right-hander Jumbo Diaz to Triple-A Louisville and promoted RHP Nate Adcock from the Bats on Sunday.

Right-hander Matt Magill was released to make room on the 40-man roster for Adcock, who was 0-2 with a 2.96 earned-run average and leading Louisville with 11 saves.

Diaz slipped to 2-1 with a 6.65 ERA over 25 relief appearances after allowing two hits, two walks and the two go-ahead runs to get the decision in Cincinnati’s 9-7 loss to San Diego on Saturday.

Magill had successful Tommy John surgery on May 8 to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He is expected to return in 2016. He was acquired in December from the Dodgers in exchange for outfielder Chris Heisey.

Van Wert to host throws clinic

VAN WERT — Van Wert High School is hosting a throws clinic for shot and discus throwers, seventh through 12 grades at the Van Wert track Wednesday on 10708 ST. Rt. 118 South. The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The cost is $50 and one can make the checks payable to Bob Priest.

You may pack a lunch, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., or you can get your own lunch at various locations in Van Wert.

Throwers are asked to bring work out clothes and throwing shoes.

Lima Spartans post 4-0 mark

The Lima Spartans boxing club went 4-0 recently at the Stone Oak Country Club in Toledo.

Posting wins for the Spartans were were Jerry Denison (85-pound junior); Jordon Sexton (100-pound junior); Demarious Reynolds (125-pound senior); and Javionte Gaddy (110-pound senior).

UNOH finishes year with six championships

LIMA – The University of Northwestern Ohio recently wrapped up its season with six championships and qualifying for six NAIA National Tournaments in the same season

The men’s and women’s soccer teams set the tone for what was to become the best season in UNOH’s young athletic history by sweeping the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference crowns in the fall.

The teams then each went on to make a deep run in the postseason, with the men’s team reaching the NAIA semifinals in Delray Beach, Florida, and the women playing their way to the NAIA Championship match.

The UNOH men’s basketball squad won 21 of their last 23 regular season games, earning a berth in the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in their 8-year history. They ended up with a share of the WHAC championship.

UNOH sophomore Lawrence Jackson earned second team NAIA All-America honors. Madison Coldren of the women’s hoops team was also named an NAIA all-America honorable mention.

The UNOH baseball and tennis teams joined in the celebration. The Racers’ baseball squad took home their first ever WHAC championship, winning the regular season title and qualifying automatically for the NAIA Tournament, in the process.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams won WHAC titles in the same year for the first time ever, and both teams picked up wins at the NAIA National Tournament.

The success was not limited to on the field, either. The Racers had 18 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes, with the baseball program leading the way with five honorees. C

Coldren (women’s basketball), John Schreiber (baseball) and Thommy Johansson (tennis) each also earned Capital One Academic All-District honors as a part of the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America program – the only honors program that combines academic and athletic excellence in the award selection process.
