BATH TOWNSHIP – Steady, rather than spectacular, play turned out to be the key to winning the East of Chicago golf tournament Sunday at Hawthorne Hills Golf Club.

Brian Kuhlman, from Ottawa, claimed the championship flight title with a 1-up win over Josh Veith, from Plain City, which is near Columbus.

Kuhlman fired nine pars in his round, to go along with a birdie and an eagle, which was enough to grab the trophy.

Kuhlman was happy with the win, in spite of not playing his best.

“I missed a 5-foot putt on No. 7 would have put me 4-up, but he bounced back and won the next two holes.” Kuhlman said. “I made the eagle to get back to 2-up and held on. We were both a little off our games today.”

Kuhlman made par on the first three holes of the match to jump out to a quick 1-up lead. A birdie and a par were good for wins on the next two holes and suddenly Kuhlman had a 3-up lead over a struggling Veith after six holes of play.

The two halved the seventh hole, before Veith responded with a birdie and a par for wins to get back to only 1-down after nine holes of play.

An eagle on the 490-yard par-5, No. 10 got Kuhlman back to 2-up.

It stayed that way until Kuhlman got into trouble and made double bogey on the 14h and Veith was back to 1-down.

A birdie on No. 15 by Veith tied the match and it stayed that way until the 18th hole.

Veith conceded the hole, and the match, after hitting his third shot over the green and Kuhlman was on the green with a 15-foot putt for birdie.

“I didn’t get off to a good start, I couldn’t get it close and I missed too many short putts.” Veith said. “Overall, I’m pretty happy with how I played all week.”

In the open flight title match, Steve Shutt beat Jeff Veith 1-up to grab the title.

Veith had lost to Scott Conrad on Saturday, but Conrad was forced to withdraw for a personal reason.

The tournament committee then decided to bring back Veith for the championship. Jeff Veith is Josh’s dad and was playing in this tournament for the 25th time.

The two went to the 18th hole with Shutt 1-up and both made bogey for a halve that gave the title to Shutt.

“I missed a couple of short putts,” Veith said. “That’s just the way it is.”

Shutt was pleased with the title.

“Neither of us played the best and it was battle to the end.” Shutt said. “It was tough conditions with the wind and the greens drying out, but I’m happy and looking forward to the city tournament.”
