Auto review: BMW M340i is sporty and pricey

BMW, known for its sportiness in the consumer market, is also known in Grasso’s Garage for its excellent driving automobiles. Fun to drive and good looking, the 2023 M340i xDrive sedan is no different.

Wrapped in upgraded Tanzanite Blue Metallic and paired with Mocha Vernasca leather, my test vehicle was glorious. Did I mention the M-Sport package addition as well? The red calipers and 19-inch alloy wheels combined nicely with the car’s colors, making it a huge hit in town and around the community. Carbon fiber and a sleek design also helped the interior, which historically has been lackluster in the M340i. What stood out most, though, was comfort. The M340i offers a great span of legroom in the front seats while still having enough space for passengers in the back.

A 3.0 Liter TwinTurbo inline 5-cylinder engine is paired with a 48V mild hybrid technology and an 8-speed sport automatic transmission. With selectable drive modes at your fingertips, the BMW M340i comes to life in both sport and sport plus mode with stiff suspension and throaty exhausts, while comfort and eco modes are smooth and quiet.

Additional items included on our M340i tester include a moon roof, power-folding side mirrors and shadowline exterior trim. Harman Kardon upgraded surround sound, Parking assistance, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and wireless charging are just a few of the items inside that we noticed.

Overall, BMW knows its consumers well and what they are looking for in a vehicle. On the M340i sedan, it comes in both an all-wheel or rear-wheel drive option. Although the 382 horsepower engine comes in with a 4.4 seconds 0-60 mph time frame, the upper $50K base price tag seems slightly steep. The BMW M3, by contrast, which costs $76,000 but has 503 horsepower and an inline 6-cylinder, is over a second faster going 0-60. The 3-series comes in 4 different options and one of them being fully EV.

The M340i is a great-looking sedan with a powerful option, and it confers the pride of owning a BMW, and the Tanzanite Blue Metallic color makes it that much more enjoyable.
