Auglaize historical group plans May bus outing

WAPAKONETA — The Auglaize County Historical Society is hosting its spring bus trip on Thursday, May 2. The destination is Butler County.

The agenda for the day trip includes:

• The Butler County Historical Society’s Benninghofen House, a showcase of the Victorian Era, including includes all the furnishings and decor fitting for a late 19th century home.

• The Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneers Monument, as built to honor those who served and sacrificed their lives in the service of the United States, as well as celebrate the men and women who first settled Butler County. The monument stands on the site of Fort Hamilton and houses a collection of Civil War weapons and swords.

• Mz Jade’s Soul Food in Middletown, a landmark local restaurant.

• The Sorg Opera House, which first opened its doors in 1891. Middletown’s first multi-millionaire, Paul J. Sorg, had the opera house built as a gift to his hometown.

• Chrisholm Historic Farmstead, an Amish-Mennonite settlement in Butler County.

• The National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting in West Chester, inside the historic Bethany Relay Station.

• The Cone, a Butler County icon, for an end-of-day ice cream treat.
