Indigenous woman to speak on ‘Doctrine of Discovery’

LIMA — Pueblo descendent Sarah Augustine will speak about the origins and framework of the doctrine of discovery, a legal and religious concept that justifies colonization, at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at Lima Mennonite Church, 1318 N. Main St., Lima.

Augustine is the co-founder and co-chair of Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition and executive director of the Dispute Resolution Center of Yakima and Kittitas Counties.

Augustine has published two books and consulted with church bodies like the World Council of Churches, Methodist Women and the Episcopal Church, according to a press release about the event.

The event is sponsored by Lima Mennonite Church and Salem Mennonite Church of Elida.
