Bluffton professor’s documentary screening March 12

BLUFFTON — A Bluffton University art professor’s documentary will air at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in Yoder Recital Hall on the Bluffton campus, 1 University Drive, Bluffton.

The 45-minute film, “Activismo: Art and Dissidence in Cuba,” documents six Cuban artists famous for resisting the political regime on the island, according to a press release about the screening.

Assistant art Professor Phil Sugden and Carole Elchert, a retired professor from the University of Findlay, co-directed the documentary, which has been accepted into more than a dozen international film festivals and won several awards including “Best Director’s Feature Documentary” at the Hercules Independent Film Festival in Spain and “Best Film of the Year” at the Hudson International Film Festival in New York.

Sugden, Elchert and two videographers traveled to Havana, Cuba, in December 2015 to gather footage of the film, which was partially funded by a Bluffton University research grant.
