‘I’m at Promise, Not at Risk’ comes to Civic Center

LIMA — New Jersey educator Baruti Kafele and Dr. Chike Akua will headline the “I’m at Promise, Not at Risk” brunch retreat at noon Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Veterans Memorial Civic Center, 7 Town Square, Lima.

Kafele is a principal and writer whose work focuses on closing the attitude gap and motivating at-risk Black male students to excel academically. Akua is an author and educator whose work focuses on empowering youth through African history.

They will discuss how to change the narrative about Black youth from the “cradle to prison” pipeline to the “cradle to careers” pipeline.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for chicken and waffle brunch, which will be available from noon to 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

A literacy arts and hip hop fair will follow from 2:30 to 5 p.m., featuring Dr. Khalid el-Hakim of the Black History Mobile Museum and others.

The retreat will conclude with a concert, “Music is Medicine: Unlocking the Healing & Empowerment Within Music,” at 7 p.m.
