Rhodes State recognized for assisting former foster youth

LIMA — Rhodes State College is one of 28 Ohio colleges and universities to earn the Ohio Reach Postsecondary designation from the Ohio Department of Education for providing resources to students who have been in kinship or foster care.

The Ohio Reach Coalition considers a variety of factors, such as whether students have access to food and housing, as well as other resources provided by the college like mentors, community building activities and staff trained to work with former foster youth.

In a press release, Gov. Mike DeWine said the designation may prove attractive to former foster youth who don’t have a trusted adult to guide them through college.

“This extra support and guidance could make a meaningful difference and help a student continue along a successful path to live their version of the American dream,” he said.
