Allen County Commissioners approve update in floodplain regulations

LIMA — Allen County Commissioners approved new floodplain regulations from the Lima/Allen County Regional Planning Commission on Thursday morning.

“The floodplain regulations are a set of federal regulations that have been passed on to the state and then the U.S. to guide the development in a way where it controls the flooding,” LACRPC Planning Engineer Adam Haunhorst said.

According to the Ohio Revised Code, the purpose of the regulations is to reduce potential damage when a flood occurs in an area.

Allen County Commissioner Beth Seibert also said weighed in on the project.

“Findlay and Ottawa are examples of why the floodplain regulations are needed because of all the flooding that happened in those communities that then had to be mitigated,” Seibert said. “We had to change the landscape and try to prevent the flooding in many ways.”
