Researchers share findings at OSU-Lima forum

LIMA — The Ohio State-Lima Campus Undergraduate Research Forum showcased the research performed by 18 undergraduate students. Research areas included biology, English, library science, physics, psychology and social work. The forum provided an opportunity for graduating student researchers to share their research endeavors with the broader community.

Lauren Chatman-Wright did her research on “How Race and Gender Impact Children’s Narrative Comprehension.” A study of preschool students, her study revealed that the gender and race of characters have a contradictory influence on young readers. There was a difference between the 3-year old subjects and the older 5-year old subjects.

Samantha Robertson did a study called “Nature relatedness and Wellbeing in Older Adults in Northwestern Ohio.” Her analysis revealed that her 73 subjects spent on average 22.35 hours in nature each month hiking, gardening and walking. The participants also identified challenges to spending time in nature — mobility, time and weather.

The local researchers included Marie Walton, who studied “Lepidopteran Diversity in a Restored Prairie.” The lepidopteran species are butterflies and moths. It was discovered that the Tecumseh Interpretive Natural Area supports 13 families and 48 species. Her research won first place in the animal science category at the 28th annual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum in which more than 200 Ohio State students presented their research.

Every presentation received scored reviews from three separate faculty or alumni reviewers. These scores were totaled to determine winners in each of 10 categories. The Denman Forum is meant to showcase research from the brightest undergraduates at Ohio State.
