Repurposed for good: Food bank opened in empty Lima building

LIMA — The Christian Community Corner Center is expanding its reach by becoming a food pantry. The center that was previously used as a soup kitchen is now providing community members with fresh food to take home.

The building that is now used to support the community was previously a skating rink. The Greenlawn skating rink opened at the location in April of 1960. Christian Corner Community Center Director Sandaly Henderson said the skating rink owner Willie Daniel donated the building over 20 years ago to be repurposed for good. St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church now operates the organization to give back to the community.

The center has partnered with Allen County Public Health’s Creating Healthy Communities Program, Activate Allen County and West Ohio Food Bank.

CCCC provides clothes, shoes and medical supplies like wheelchairs and hygiene products to community members. When there is an abundance, the organization gives it to those who can’t leave their homes.

“When we are finished and we have stuff left over we’re going to drop it off at the community rooms for people that can’t get out,” said Henderson. “When they tell us to take care of the sick and the shut-in and check on them that is what we are doing.”

The community center also has a place where children can play and adults can watch television.

“I grew up back and forth (between) here and Cleveland, Ohio,” said Henderson. “In Cleveland, community centers were the hangout for low-income families. We are trying to make it a beautiful place here and I think we are on the right path.”

In the future, the director hopes to host Sunday night dinners and bring in local pastors to speak and engage.

The organization gifts ‘pantry items’ every Wednesday from 9-10:30 a.m. at 1601 McClain Rd. The organization is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Community members interested in receiving items must simply fill out a form upon arrival.
