Youth employment program kicks off

LIMA — The next generation is preparing to lead the way. The City of Lima has kicked off the GenNext program for young adults ages 16-24. Any young adult who lives in the City and does not have a post-secondary degree is encouraged to apply. The program will provide a paid internship to those interested in learning about a specific field.

The City of Lima is partnering with employers throughout the City to make this opportunity possible.

“There are over 15 community partners who have agreed to employ or support the youth’s professional pre-employment education classes,” said Amber Martin, Workforce and Small Business Development Coordinator. “Business leaders have been very supportive of the GenNext program and are eager to develop the next generation of talent.”

The program is set to begin in the spring of 2023. Participants will receive pre-employment training and then commence their internship in the summer.

“The timeline for GenNext will be in April,” added Martin. “The three Saturdays following Easter there will be pre-employment classes for youth. They will be in the morning. These classes will offer financial literacy. They will also offer the basics of resume writing: cover letter writing, interviewing and professionalism.”

Martin said the program will address communication, conflict resolution and dress code. Following the pre-employment classes, GenNext will provide 8 weeks of a paid internship for 20 hours a week.

Some of the employers include Lima Memorial Hospital, Bon-Secours Mercy Health St. Rita’s, DANA, Spherion, Rudolph foods, Reineke Ford and others.

Once students apply for the program they will be matched with the appropriate workplace. The hope is to provide young adults with work-field experience.

Applicants are welcome to apply in person at the City of Lima Municipal Building, 50 Town Square Lima, or online at bit.ly/3GX4GT7.
