LIMA — Apollo Career Center board members learned about the apprenticeship program in the health sciences program. More than 50 students are involved with a two-week on, two-week off school apprenticeship program in various trades.
Megan Conner and Ashley Rozell, instructors at Apollo, shared the health sciences apprenticeship program with the Apollo board of education.
Both the human resources departments at Mercy Health and Lima Memorial were contacted to establish an apprenticeship.
Instructor Ashley Rozell explained, “I was basically the liaison between the high school and both of them (hospitals). The apprenticeship program here at Apollo is two weeks at school and then two weeks at a full-time job. Then they rotate in and out. They hire them like regular employees, and they do the job to meet expectations just like any other employee. Then if there’s an issue we can intervene. We try to make them better employees for the facilities.”
Kaitlyn Roberts, an Apollo student involved in the health sciences apprenticeship program, shared a little bit about her job, “I take vitals, blood sugars and basic patient care.”
“St. Rita’s is very happy; Memorial seems very happy with all of the students we sent. The goal for both hospitals is to get employees who want to stay in Lima,” Rozell said. “Whether they stay at Apollo in adult ed or if they go to Rhodes, as long as they’re in this community and they get a job within the hospital, that’s our goal.”
