Spartan players recognize teachers

LIMA — Prior to the football game in Spartan Stadium, eighth-grade football players recognized their favorite teachers.

Teachers were honored to be selected. Emmanuel Curtis, CTAG coordinator at North Middle School, said, “I think it’s impressive. It’s important for young people to relate and know that there are adults that have their backs. It shows they are paying attention and that they are appreciative of those they’ve connected to.

“It was impressive because you know these are COVID kids. So that means we missed out on some time during the school year when they were with us, at least with me when I had fifth and sixth grade. For him to pinpoint me was special. So I was impressed. I was happy. I was pleased.”

Tacorian Haithcox chose Emmanuel Curtis.

“While in CTAG, we would listen to guest speakers. During these presentations, the speakers would talk about the important history of my race and culture. But most importantly, for the need for me to become a better man,” Haithcox said.

G’Vonte Davis chose to play for Ms. Vickie Shurelds of Heir Force Community School.

“Ms. Shurelds is my favorite ELA teacher. Whenever I do not understand something, she motivates me to keep working through it until I learn the material. I also love reading the quotes of famous authors and actors she has decorating the classroom,” Davis said.

Emmanuel Jokinen-Rutz chose to play for Erin Ridenour.

“Mrs. Ridenour is a very kind and special teacher. Mrs. Ridenour always helps me both inside and outside of school,” Jokinen-Rutz said.

Students celebrated their favorite teachers and the teachers were there to support students outside the school.
