August Declared Breastfeeding Awareness Month

LIMA —World Breastfeeding Week is held August 1-7 during Breastfeeding Awareness Month. The Ohio Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program supports breastfeeding. The program not only provides education but appointments with healthcare professionals.

“Around the world, we are talking about ways everyone can step up to support breastfeeding,” said Lori Nester, Breastfeeding Coordinator for the Allen County Health Department. “Our goal is to make sure women and families are getting accurate information so they can make an informed decision and they are getting appropriate support as they need it. The WIC program in Allen County is available to help with that education. We have pumps available. We can help decide what kind of pump they might need. We also have staff available to do follow-up weight checks or whatever may be needed along the way.”

According to a recent press release, Governor Mike DeWine and Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted have signed an official proclamation naming August Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Locally, Mayor Sharetta Smith made an official proclamation, on Wednesday morning, in agreement that August is also Breastfeeding Awareness Month in the city of Lima.
