Ada motorcyclist injured in ramp mishap

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP — An Ada man suffered serious injuries Thursday night after his motorcycle lost control and struck a concrete divider on a highway entrance ramp before hitting an oncoming semi truck.

Matthew S. Campbell, 37, of Ada, was transported to Bluffton Hospital by an unknown third party before being transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo with a serious injury, according to a press release from the Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

According to the release, Campbell rode a 1991 Harley Davidson motorcycle, entering the entrance ramp from state Route 696 toward U.S. 30 at 10:38 p.m. Thursday. He lost control of the motorcycle and struck the concrete divider, throwing himself off the motorcycle. The bike continued across the divider into the opposite direction of travel, where it struck a 2015 Freightliner semi truck and trailer operated by Vladimir V. Yuid, 37, of Springfield, Mo., that had exited U.S. 3 eastbound and traveled toward state Route 696.

Yudin was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. No alcohol or drugs are suspected involving Yudin.

According to the highway patrol, Campbell ran from the crash scene on foot before law enforcement arrived. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and officials haven’t ruled out alcohol or drug use as a factor.

Assisting at the scene were the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, Bluffton Police Department, Beaverdam-Richland Fire and EMS, Ohio State Highway Patrol Aviation, Blakes Towing and Minich’s Towing. The crash remains under investigation.
