YMCA celebrates 30 years of “Healthy Kids Day”

LIMA — Over 300 kids participated in fun and games at the Lima Family YMCA on Saturday, with the YMCA sharing ideas about healthy foods and ways to stay active during the summertime.

The free activities held between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. included a one-mile walk/run on the track, a family swim in the YMCA pool, an obstacle course, and two bounce houses.

Local organizations like West Ohio Community Action Partnership (WOCAP), Westgate, and Walmart helped sponsor the event. Walmart donated 30 children’s bikes, which were given away through a raffle drawing.

“After kids visited 12 of the 24 booths at the event, collecting one stamp at each booth, they submitted their stamps for a chance to win a bike,” said Devaki Gannesh, youth and teen development director at the Lima Family YMCA.

“One in three children in the U.S. is obese, and when summertime hits, kids are often idler. Research shows that kids fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities.”
