Comments being accepted surrounding Mercer County poultry farm

FORT RECOVERY — The Ohio Department of Agriculture is accepting comments on a draft Permit to Operate renewal for Gerald Post Pullets, 2751 Fox Road, Fort Recovery. If the final permit is issued, the PTO would be valid for five years.

The renewal is to replace an expiring permit for the entire farm. It is drafted to regulate operations with plans for manure management, insect and rodent control, mortality management and emergency response and would be valid for a five-year period, at which time the owner would again be required to renew the operating permit.

The existing barn has the design capacity for approximately 134,000 pullets. The farm raises pullets, which are brought in as day-old chicks and housed until roughly 18 weeks of age and then shipped to a layer facility for egg production.

The pullets produce approximately 800 tons of manure annually. All the manure is distributed off the farm through a manure broker or cooperating crop farmer for use as organic nutrients for crop production.

Comments and/or public meeting requests must be received by the DLEP office no later than 5 p.m. Dec. 27, 2021. Comments can either be mailed to Ohio Department of Agriculture, Division of Livestock Environmental Permitting, 8995 E. Main St., Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068 or emailed to [email protected].
