Van Wert man jailed in assault of Lima man

LIMA — A Van Wert man faces charges after a reported assault on a Lima man that allegedly revolved around a shared relationship with an unnamed female.

According to a statement released by the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on Monday evening to the report of an assault and burglary in the 2700 block of Lowell Avenue in Lima.

The alleged victim, a 41-year-old male, told deputies he was asleep on his couch at about 8:20 p.m. Monday when he awoke to being assaulted by a man later identified as Craig A. Hirschy, 33, of Van Wert. Deputies say Hirschy had entered the home through an unlocked door.

The victim, whose name was not released, said Hirschy pinned him to his couch and repeatedly struck him with a closed fist. Hirschy reportedly then demanded access to the victim’s cell phone message history. The victim said he believed the assault stemmed from a relationship they shared with a female acquaintance.

Hirschy then fled from the residence.

Later that evening Allen County authorities learned that Hirschy was taken into custody in Mercer County for an apparently unrelated aggravated menacing charge that occurred sometime after the assault in Lima.

Hirschy has been formally charged in Allen County with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony. He is currently being held at the Mercer County jail and is expected to be transferred into Allen County custody in the coming days.
