Minster man dies in three-vehicle crash

MCCARTYVILE — A Minster man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash in the village of McCartyville.

According to Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart, Terry E. Heitkamp, 48, of Minster, passed away at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, from injuries sustained in the crash. He was taken by CareFlight from the scene of the crash.

At 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a three-vehicle crash near the intersection of state Route 29 and Bornhorst Road, in McCartyville, in northern Shelby County.

Preliminary investigation revealed a white 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Heitkamp, was stopped facing southeast on state Route 29, where he was attempting to make a left hand turn into Mully’s Drive-Thru. A 2008 Pontiac G6, driven by Jonathon Craig, 49, of St. Marys, traveling southeast on state Route 29, failed to stop, striking the rear of Heitkamp’s vehicle and forcing it into the opposite lane of travel. Heitkamp was then was struck by a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Jaymee Donovan, 42, of Botkins, who traveled northwest on state Route 29. All three vehicles sustained heavy damage.

Heitkamp was treated at the scene by a doctor and two nurses who witnessed the crash and came onto the scene. Heitkamp was transported by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital in critical condition. While at the hospital, Heitkamp died of his injuries.

Donovan refused medical treatment while at the scene and was taken by private vehicle to Joint Township Hospital. Craig refused all medical treatment.

Units responding to the scene were the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Van Buren Fire Department, and Anna Rescue Squad. The crash remains under investigation.
