LIMA — A Delphos teenager who police and prosecutors say severely beat his girlfriend’s 2-month-old daughter entered pleas of guilty Monday to felonious assault charges that could land him in prison for more than three decades.
Anthony Denoyer, 19, will be sentenced Aug. 10 after pleading guilty to the four second-degree felony counts. He could face as few as two years behind bars when Judge Jeffrey Reed makes his ruling, or the full sentence would put him behind bars for more than 30 years. A pre-sentence investigation was ordered by the court.
Denoyer was indicted by an Allen County grand jury in December on the four felonious assault counts, two of which included a specification alleging permanent disabling harm to a child less than the age of 10. He also was indicted on four counts of endangering children, also second-degree felonies.
Allen County Prosecuting Attorney Juergen Waldick, following Denoyer’s pleas, said specifications addressing permanent harm to the child were dismissed after medical officials at Children’s Hospital in Columbus determined that, despite a litany of serious injuries the Delphos man inflicted upon her, the infant was expected to make a full recovery. The prosecutor said Denoyer pleaded guilty to the most serious charges against him.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Randall Basinger said the then-2-month-old child suffered 18 broken ribs at the hand of Denoyer during an incident alleged to have taken place in October of last year. Additionally the young girl suffered a whiplash injury and “several” skull fractures. Medical experts said the injuries represented four separate physical attacks.
The alleged incidents took place at a residence in Delphos, prosecutors said.
According to a press release issued by Delphos Police Chief Mark Slate late last year, police were contacted Oct. 29 by officials at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center requesting detectives respond to the emergency room at the hospital in reference to an injured child. Upon their arrival at the hospital, detectives learned the child was being transported via LifeFlight helicopter to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus with what were considered life-threatening injuries.
Denoyer was charged in a separate case with of grand theft of a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property, felonies of the fourth and fifth degree, respectively, were dismissed by prosecutors Monday in exchange for the Delphos man’s pleas to the remaining charges.
