SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Law enforcement identified a man who died after his vehicle went into a pond at McClain and Buckeye Roads on Friday afternoon.

Rasheed H. Almalik, 38, of Lima, was the driver of the vehicle, Shawnee Township Police Department Chief Michael Keith announced Wednesday afternoon.

Divers from the Ohio Department of Parks and Watercraft and the Allen County Dive Team recovered Almalik’s body Tuesday morning.

Shawnee Township Police were called to the scene at 5:23 p.m. Friday on a report of a vehicle in the pond. A passenger in the Chevy Tahoe, Jeremy Clay, 34, of Lima, was able to swim to shore. He was transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center by his family.

According to an earlier news release, the vehicle was eastbound in the 500 block of Buckeye Road. Just after crossing the railroad tracks, the vehicle went off the north side of the road, through a fence and into the pond, located on the property of Superior Forge.
