Body of vehicle’s driver pulled from Shawnee Township pond

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Divers from the Ohio Department of Parks and Watercraft and the Allen County Dive Team recovered the body Tuesday morning of the driver of a Chevy Tahoe that allegedly drove into a pond near the intersection of McClain and Buckeye roads on Friday afternoon.

According to a statement from Shawnee Township Police Chief Michael Keith, divers used sonar attached to a boat to search the area starting at approximately 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. After checking the entire pond, a probable location was marked, and a K9 trained in cadaver detection was used to verify a scent.

Keith said that at approx. 11:11 a.m. a diver from the Allen County Dive Team entered the water and located a body at the area marked by the K9. The body was recovered and sent to Lucas County for an autopsy.

“Our department will withhold identity of the person pending verification of Lucas County Coroner,” the police chief said.

Shawnee Township Police were called to the scene at 5:23 p.m. Friday on a report of a vehicle in the pond. A passenger in the Chevy Tahoe, Jeremy Clay, 34, of Lima, was able to swim to shore. He was transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center by his family.

According to an earlier news release, the vehicle was eastbound in the 500 block of Buckeye Road. Just after crossing the railroad tracks, the vehicle went off the north side of the road, through a fence and into the pond, located on the property of Superior Forge.
