LIMA — Two juveniles will face hearings next month to see if they will stand trial as adults in the January murder of a Lima man.
The juveniles, who were arrested in April in connection with the shooting death of Danielle Jackson outside Pappy’s Lounge on West North Street, have been identified to date only by their age and initials — J.S. and J.D. are both 15-year-old males.
A pre-trial conference has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 11 for J.S. A similar hearing for J.D. is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on June 25. Both hearings will be held via video conferencing before Allen County Juvenile Court Judge Glenn Derryberry.
A court spokesman said the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s office has requested a permissive bind over in each case, meaning that the process going forward will include a probable-cause hearing, followed by an amenability hearing, to determine if the youths should remain in the juvenile justice system or be transferred to the adult system.
Jackson, 44, was found in the early-morning hours of Jan. 20. He had been shot in the rear parking lot of Pappy’s Lounge, 1000 W. North St., Lima. He was pronounced dead after being transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center, which is a block away from the shooting scene.
The juveniles were arrested April 13 by Lima police and were transported to the Allen County Juvenile Detention Center in connection with Jackson’s death and face other potential charges. A delinquency hearing was held that day for J.S., who authorities said was also wanted on a separate charge unrelated to Jackson’s death.
A preliminary hearing was held the following day for J.D. Appearing at that hearing were Assistant Allen County Prosecuting Attorney Mariah Cunningham and Officer Chad Kunkleman of the Lima Police Department. Kunkleman told the judge the juvenile had participated in a robbery of Jackson and was picked up by police April 13. He said the boy “admitted to being one of the subjects” involved in the incident.
Cunningham at that time said paperwork would be filed asking the juvenile be bound over to be tried as an adult in Allen County Common Pleas Court.
