LIMA — A 19-year-old Lima woman was sentenced Friday to three years in prison for her role in an organized plot to rob her former boyfriend at gunpoint.
Jordyn Mitchell was indicted in by an Allen County grand jury in November on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated robbery with the use of a firearm, even though Mitchell herself never touched a firearm. She entered into an agreement with prosecutors in February that called for her to plead guilty to a second-degree count of robbery.
“This is a classic example of a young lady that got carried away by a certain lifestyle that she decided to live,” Mitchell’s attorney, Zach Maisch, told Judge Terri Kohlrieser. “This is her first felony, and boy did she pick a doozy. The use of alcohol and drugs, as is too often the case, was an underlying issue in all of this.”
Mitchell apologized to the victim, her family and the community as a whole for her actions and asked that some type of drug rehabilitation program be included in any prison sentence handed down by the judge.
“I also apologize to my mom, who is seated behind me today. She did not raise me to be the person I am today,” Mitchell said. “My time spent in jail has taught me some self-respect, and I realize it’s not too late for me to become the person I want to be.”
According to court documents, Mitchell was complicit in a scheme between herself and three other individuals to rob Tyshawn Thompson outside the Maplewood/Northwood Apartments on Brower Road in Lima last September. Thompson told police he had been kicked out of his apartment by Mitchell and their roommate, Brenna Cochran, and was to meet with Mitchell at approximately 1:50 a.m. outside the apartment complex to exchange some personal property.
Thompson said that during that meeting, two black males approached the group. One of the men, later identified as Cardale Funches, reportedly pulled a handgun from his sweatshirt and pointed it at Thompson before robbing him of his cell phone and identification. The other black male was later identified as Isahia Dyous, court documents show.
Mitchell reportedly admitted to police that she set up the robbery and knew Funches possessed the handgun. Funches, Cochran and Dyous are awaiting trial for their roles in the robbery.
