Real Wheels: Family fun in a Ford Model T

SPENCERVILLE — Randy Roof, of Spencerville, grew up around classic cars.

“My dad had several cars and was interested in antiques, and I just got interested as well,” Roof said.

Roof’s dad owned Model T’s that he and his brothers “got to push and polish” during their childhood.

“They were Dad’s cars, and we did not get to drive them until it was close to the end,” Roof said.

Today Roof owns nine Model T’s ranging from a 1915 to a 1924. He, his wife Kim, their three children and their families enjoy driving the classics — during nice weather.

“They don’t go out in the rain or cold,” Roof said.

The Ford Model T was produced from 1908 to 1927 and is known for its affordability. The Model T was named one of the most influential cars of the 20th century. There were approximately 16.5 million Model T’s sold during its production run.

The Roofs, along with their children, went to the Gilmore Car Museum in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to attend a Model T Driving School.

“The Model T is operated with three foot pedals; with a high gear, low gear and reverse,” Roof said.

Roof said he enjoys teaching others how to drive these vehicles.

The engine in this 1924 Ford Model T Touring car is a 17 horsepower, four cylinder.

“My lawnmower has more horsepower than this Ford Model T,” said Roof.

Going fast isn’t the thrill in driving the Model T; the thrill is derived from driving a piece of automotive history. More people will be staring at the Ford Model T with an appreciation and respect for the owner than the punk racer going way too fast down the road.

“We have fun with them,” Roof said.
