Suspect in St. Marys murder makes court appearance

WAPAKONETA — One of three Columbus-area people charged in the April 2018 shooting death of Dexter Turner at a condominium on the south side of Grand Lake St. Marys appeared briefly in Auglaize County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday, as her trial date approaches.

Syniqua Bell, 31, of Columbus, was indicted in August of last year by an Auglaize County grand jury on charges of aggravated murder and murder, both unclassified felonies. Other charges leveled against Bell include murder, attempted aggravated murder and two counts of attempted murder, all felonies of the first degree; two counts of felonious assault, second-degree felonies; and one count of obstructing justice, a felony of the third degree.

Bell was ordered held on $500,000 bond and was released in October after posting 10% of that amount. Her jury trial set is set to begin May 4.

Bell appeared in court Tuesday with her attorney, Isabella Dixon, for a short pretrial hearing as Judge Frederick Pepple addressed scheduling and other facets of the case.

The Columbus woman is charged along with Keith Tyrone Bitting, 31, and Jacar Bitting, 27, in Dexter Turner’s murder. Turner, 47, and his son, Alim Amir Turner, 25, were shot April 11, 2018, at a residence believed to be the home of one of the men.

Auglaize County officials received a 911 call at approximately 3:22 a.m. that day from a male who stated he had been shot, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said in a statement issued a few hours after the incident.

There had been no new public developments announced in the case during the ensuing 17 months until mid-September of 2019, when Solomon issued a statement that three people had been arrested in connection with the case.
