Bath trustees set public hearing on overlay plans

BATH TOWNSHIP — Bath Township trustees Tuesday night heard from Scott Campbell, clerk for the Bath Township Zoning Board, about the state Route 309 Corridor Overlay District. He officially presented the plan to trustees, who have 30 days to hold a public hearing.

The plan would create an overlay on the north side of state Route 309 between Saratoga Avenue and just west of Devonshire Drive and would determine what could go in that area if the property is sold to someone else. This would not affect current property owners. That area is currently a hodgepodge of commercial and residential properties.

The plan is a combination of recommendations from the Allen County Regional Planning Commission and the Bath Township Zoning Board.

“Regional Planning got the same proposal, they made a recommendation to the trustee to adopt that and the commission took the exact same plan and reviewed it also. So there’s just two recommendations, one plan,” said Campbell.

Work on the plan began two years ago.

“To my knowledge, there is no community in this region that’s ever tried to utilize this,” said Campbell.

Ruth Hollenbacher, a nearby resident, still isn’t sold on the plan.

“It’s a horrible plan. It may be good for the developer that wants to come in and put a Chipotle in but for the homes that are left behind, it’s a disaster,” said Hollenbacher.

She said they plan to continue to oppose this.

“If this passes the trustees, we’re going to referend it,” she said.

The trustees set the public hearing for March 3 at the Bath Township House. That public hearing will begin at 5 p.m.

Trustees have 20 days after the public hearing to vote on the overlay plan but could vote on it at their 7 p.m. meeting that evening.
