BLANCHARD TOWNSHIP — A two-vehicle collision in Putnam County Friday morning left a Glandorf woman dead and a Leipsic teenager hospitalized.
According to a report from the Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 7:13 a.m. Friday on U.S. 224, near County Road 5.
Angela Schumaker, 39, of Glandorf, died in the crash.
The patrol said Schumaker was traveling eastbound on U.S. 224 in a 2016 Chevrolet Suburban. A 2005 Dodge Ram, driven by Trevor Gerten, 16, of Leipsic, which was westbound on U.S. 224, traveled left of center and struck her Suburban head-on. The Suburban stopped to rest on the south side of the roadway, while the Dodge stopped in the middle of U.S. 224.
Moments later, a secondary crash occurred, when a 2009 Freightliner, driven by Richard Greene, 51, of Toledo, that was westbound on U.S. 224 struck the Dodge while Gerten was still inside.
Schumaker was pronounced dead at the scene by the Putnam County coroner. Gerten was transported by Ottawa Fire and EMS to Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay, for treatment of what were described as serious injuries. Greene was not injured.
Friday night’s boys basketball games between Ottawa-Glandorf and Bath were postponed after the death of Schumaker, whose husband, Brad, is the junior varsity basketball coach for the Titans.
Tyson McGlaughlin, athletic director and varsity boys basketball coach at O-G, said Friday the team will take the court for its scheduled game at Findlay on Saturday night. He said Schumaker will be missed.
“Our prayers and condolences go out to the Schumaker family. (Angela) was a great woman who meant a lot to a lot of people in our community,” McGlaughlin said.
A statement on a Bath Twitter account informed members of that community that Friday’s game was canceled.
“Praying for O-G,” the statement concluded.
Schumaker worked for Marathon in the human resources department, according to her obituary with Love Funeral Home. She had four children, Owen, Jordan, Griffin and Larkin. She previously served as junior volleyball coach at Ottawa-Glandorf from 2005 until 2011.
Schumaker and Greene were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, the report said. Gerten was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol or drug impairment is not believed to be a contributing factor.
The patrol was assisted on scene by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Ottawa Fire and EMS, Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home and Meyer’s Towing Services.
