Lima man reportedly admits robbing convenience store

LIMA — A Lima man police say robbed the Rich gas station on North Main Street in Lima earlier this year entered not guilty pleas on Friday to felony charges returned against him earlier this month by an Allen County grand jury.

Calvin McGhee, 41, is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery with specifications that include the use of a firearm and also labeling McGhee as a repeat violent offender. He is being held in the Allen County jail under a $500,000 bond.

According to court documents, McGhee was identified by an employee of the gas station when he reportedly returned to the scene of the crime one week after the robbery.

On Oct. 20 at shortly after 6 a.m. the station at 792 N. Main St. was robbed at gunpoint by a black male wearing a brown hoodie, blue Michigan beanie and blue jeans. Carrying a silver pistol covered in a plastic bag and pointing it at clerks, the robber demanded money before fleeing. The incident was captured on in-store video.

A week later, police were contacted by a clerk who was working on the day of the robbery. She said the suspect had just left the store. Security footage was reviewed and a black male wearing a black coat, gray pants and a black stocking cap was said to be the same male subject that had robbed the store.

McGhee was found a short time later walking in the 600 block of North Elizabeth Street and was taken into custody. Court documents show he admitted to detectives that he was the person who robbed the store on Oct. 20.
