Adopt a Stocking: Mother of two (soon to be three) struggles to get by

LIMA — When her mother died approximately six years ago, Yvonne says, her life started its downward spiral.

After spending time in Cincinnati living on the streets, the Lima native, along with her 12-year-old son and her newborn baby boy, returned to Lima a year ago. After living “house-to-house” for more than a month, the young woman in January found an apartment.

She also found herself pregnant and was faced with some difficult, life-altering decisions.

“I wasn’t going to keep the baby because I don’t have the financial means to care for it,” Yvonne, not her real name, said. “But when I found out I was going to have a little girl, I decided to keep her. If I could get a little help with that, it would great.”

She added, “I’m just a single parent doing what I can for my kids to show them a better life. My mom was my biggest supporter; she helped me through a lot. When she died, things just went downhill bad. And the boys’ father is no help at all.”

She said representatives from the Salvation Army suggested she put her name into the Adopt a Stocking program, “and I’m just so blessed to have this opportunity. I just want to have a good home for the kids.”

Yvonne said her oldest son wears size 18 pants, extra-large boy’s pants and size 10 shoes. The youngest boy, now 2, wears size 2T infant clothing and size 6C shoes. Yvonne wears size 9 pants, shirts sized large and size 5 shoes.

Her baby daughter will be born in April.

The family could use basic household items in addition to toys for the two boys. Yvonne sleeps on a mattress on the floor and said a bed frame would be appreciated.

Her oldest son likes to play video games but does not have a gaming system or games. The baby of the house also needs toys, and Yvonne said educational items that would help teach him his A-B-C’s or how to count would help him get a good start in life.

“And anything for a newborn,” she added, “would be greatly appreciated.”
