Impaired driver crashes following Mercer County chase

FORT RECOVERY — Two Fort Recovery residents were taken to a Coldwater hospital with minor injuries following a high-speed chase that ended in a single-vehicle traffic accident early Sunday.

The incident began at approximately 2:19 a.m. when troopers from the Wapakoneta post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol attempted to stop a blue 2003 Ford Explorer on Park Road near state Route 49 in Mercer County for a left-of-center infraction.

The Explorer, driven by Magdiel Gaytan, 26, stopped at the posted stop sign at state Route 49 and Park Road, just north of Fort Recovery, then continued north on state Route 49 for approximately two miles, traveling at speeds as high as 88 miles per hour before crashing through the guardrail off of Cummins Road and striking a tree.

Gaytan and a passenger, Cesar M. Lopez, 21, were transported to Coldwater Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol is a contributing factor to the crash.
