Salyers arraigned for alleged murder of 18-month-old

LIMA — Bond was set at $2.5 million Wednesday for the Lima man police say killed the infant son of his live-in girlfriend.

Gabriel Salyers, 31, made his initial court appearance Wednesday in Lima Municipal Court following his arrest on a charge of murder for causing the death of 18-month-old Jaxxon Sullivan during the commission of a felonious assault.

Salyers appeared via video-conferencing in the courtroom of Municipal Court Judge Tammie Hursh. Allen County Prosecuting Attorney Juergen Waldick requested Salyers’ bond be set at $2.5 million, telling the judge the suspect poses a substantial flight risk because he faces a maximum penalty if convicted of life in prison.

Asked by Hursh if he had anything to say, Salyers replied, “I didn’t do it.” A preliminary hearing in the case was set for 3:30 p.m. April 11.

Police responded Sunday to 826 Oak St. in response to the report of an unresponsive toddler. The infant was transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center due to several reported injuries and was later transferred to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Toledo in critical condition. He died in the early morning Tuesday.

The subsequent investigation led detectives to arrest Salyers — reportedly the live-in boyfriend of the toddler’s mother, Shelly Overly Wireman — and charge him with murder.
