Sexual Assault Awareness Month marked at UNOH

LIMA — Sexual assault is a global problem that affects everyone.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the University of Northwestern Ohio is hosting a variety of events this month designed to call attention to the problem.

“One in five college-aged females will be sexually assaulted while on campus and one in sixteen men are going to be sexually assaulted or experience sexual assaults while they are on campus,” said Dr. Jaclyn Jarvis, a licensed clinical psychologist at UNOH.

The theme of Sexual Assault Awareness Month this year is “Embrace Your Voice.”

“Our hope is that we’ll give students a chance to talk about it, shed light on it, make conversation, have a dialogue about it that it’s happening, talking about, obviously what resources are there in the community both here on our campus and then locally in our community,” Jarvis said.

On Wednesday a booth was set up in the student commons where Jarvis and Danielle McClure, Director of Student Success and the Title IX Coordinator for students, passed out information on sexual assault.

“Today’s event is cookies and consent, so the students will tell us what consent means to them. They will be able to write what consent is on a sticky note and post it on our tri-boards to be displayed and if they participate they’ll be able to get a cookie,” McClure said.

The “Consent Is…” display will be moving to the 100 Building on the UNOH Campus on Thursday.

On April 10 and 24, there will be a “Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Seminar at the UNOH Event Center.

On April 12, a “Me Too” Flag Campaign will be held in the 13000 Building. A display of “Me Too” Flags will be displayed around Racers Rock between April 12 and April 20.

On April 17 “SANE [Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners] speaking event will feature a discussion with students about the process of working with survivors who visit the hospital setting following a sexual assault. That program will be held in Room 13110 in the 1300 Building.

On April 18, there will be a “Show of Hands” event between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Racers Rock where students, faculty, and staff can place their hand print on Racers Rock as a sign of support to end sexual violence on campus.
