LIMA — Decorion Dawson, a 26-year-old Lima man who was in court for his second gun-related offense in three years, was sentenced Monday to four years in prison on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated robbery.
Dawson is also facing a misdemeanor assault charge in Lima Municipal Court stemming from a Dec. 27 alleged incident at the Lima Waffle House restaurant on Neubrecht Road that reportedly left a Lima woman with serious injuries.
In the robbery case, police say Dawson was one of two men who arranged a drug deal on the early-morning hours of Nov. 7 at a residence on Heathway Lane in Lima and who subsequently robbed two men at gunpoint who intended to purchase the drugs.
Dawson and Marquise Turner were picked out of a police photo lineup by the victims, who described Turner as the one who set up the deal and Dawson as the one who put a gun in the face of the occupants.
Dawson was indicted by an Allen County grand jury in December on two counts of aggravated robbery with firearm specification, each felonies of the first degree. During Monday’s court appearance Dawson accepted a deal from prosecutors whereby he would plead guilty to a single count of aggravated robbery, a second-degree felony, in exchange for the state’s dismissal of the remaining charge and both firearm specifications.
Dawson apologized in court “for my role in the robbery” and said he was “smoking pot and drinking real bad” at the time of the incident. “I know that’s no excuse, but ….,” he told Judge David Cheney.
Cheney sentenced Dawson to four years in prison in keeping with the sentence that had been stipulated in the prosecutor’s plea agreement.
