LIMA — Allen County Sheriff Matt Treglia has released his department’s second biannual newsletter, a vast array of statistics, updates and statistics from final six months of 2017.
Treglia, who took office less than 13 months ago,in August of last year released to the public what the sheriff said at the time will be bi-annual newsletter to the public. True to his word, the second installment of the twice-yearly report has hit the streets.
In a message to the citizens of Allen County, Treglia said operations within the department “are definitely moving in a direction that I am very happy with.”
The sheriff has, over the past six months, “changed many standards and procedures regarding hiring,” requiring new hires “without exception” to pass physical fitness test, polygraph examination, drug screen and psychological examination.
“I did this because I believe, without question, my ultimate responsibility is to hire the absolute best candidate that I can” for the citizens of the county, he said.
Statistics
The sheriff’s bi-annual report notes that during the final six months of 2017 the department handled 26,662 calls for service. That number does not include calls where the sheriff’s department assisted other county law enforcement agencies.
Among serious crimes, only rape showed an increase from July to December last year compared to the same period in 2016. There were four reported rapes in the final six months of 2017, up from one from 2016. Other crimes reported in the final six months of 2017 (with 2016 numbers in parentheses) included robbery, 8 (12); aggravated assault, 3 (3); assault, 165 (183); burglary, 75 (115); theft, 238 (322) and motor vehicle theft, 7 (14).
The Sheriff’s Office 9-1-1 Center received 25,981 calls during that time, answering nearly 99 percent of those calls in less than 10 seconds, according to the report.
Deputies also handled 402 crash reports on county roadways over the final six months of 2017. Of that total, 94 reports indicated some level of injury. Road deputies made 3,575 traffic stops during the period, with 164 of those stops generated due to reports of reckless or possibly intoxicated drivers. Ninety-one drivers were charged with operating a vehicle under the influence.
A total of 896 traffic citations were issued during this period.
Overtime and training
Treglia concentrated heavily over the final six months of 2017 on reducing the amount of overtime paid to department employees, and trimmed nearly $100,000 off the amount of overtime paid during 2016.
The sheriff reduced the $95,298 paid in overtime to jail staffers in 2016 to just $27,516 last year, the report states. Overtime paid to all other employees was reduced from $100,000 in 2016 to $77,000 last year.
Between July 1 and Dec. 31, Treglia approved 3,096 training hours for his employees. Training included topics such as mental health training, range training, use of force training, and special assignments training, according to the report.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Office currently employees 166 full and part-time employees.
