Charges filed against Lakeview man following scuffle with police

LIMA — A 28-year-old Lakeview resident remained in fair condition at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s on Wednesday after suffering undisclosed injuries while attempting to flee from police.

Blane P. Schmitt was injured Tuesday when he reportedly fell while attempting to elude police on foot.

According to a police department spokesman, Lima Police Officer Tanner Engle went to The Corner Grocery, 500 N. Elizabeth St., shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday in an attempt to serve an arrest warrant to Schmitt. The police spokesman said the warrant was issued by a county other than Allen and said he was uncertain of both the nature of the warrant or the county in which the warrant originated.

After Engle attempted to serve Schmitt with the warrant, the two scuffled briefly before Schmitt left the scene on foot, according to police. While fleeing, the suspect fell to the ground and sustained unspecified injuries. Schmitt and Engle were both transported to Mercy Heath, where the policeman was treated and released.

Schmitt was charged by Lima Police with resisting arrest and obstructing official business.

The investigation remains underway, and no official report has yet been filed.
