Lima Council to consider 2018 budget

LIMA — The City of Lima will be considering the ordinance that establishes the 2018 fiscal year budget during its upcoming Monday meeting, to be held at 7 p.m. in the city’s council chambers, 50 Town Square.

The budget’s general fund’s final tally is $34.9 million — a total higher by roughly 3 percent from last year’s budget due to increases in Lima’s tax base. Salaries make up more than half of that total, or $18 million.

The city has been putting together its budget since the end of last year, and public hearings were held near the end of January.

The 2018 budget is expected to keep the number of city employees at relatively level numbers compared to the last three years, when the city recouped the staffing losses caused by the 2008 recession.

The budget also pays for a number of construction projects throughout the city, such as the railroad underpass project planned for East Elm Street.

Outside of budget considerations, the city council will also be deciding on:

• Payment for the relocation of power lines due to the Paul Street tank painting project

• Repairs to the north nitrification tower at the Lima Wastewater Treatment Plant

• Recovering public funds owed to the city due to weed/property cleanup costs

• Getting rid of unclaimed equipment — a push mower, chainsaws, power washers, edger, etc. — through govdeals.com, which were found by the Lima Police Department

• Purchase of a 2018 Ford Fusion and 300 tons of road salt

• Approval of a six-month moratorium on the permitting of new telecom towers due to the need to review city regulations
