BLUFFTON — Sarah Gillen, 18, a senior at Bluffton High School, is a leader inside and outside of the classroom.
She’ll attend Bowling Green State University in the fall and plans to pursue a business major.
“I want to go into business because of how much interaction you can get with other people and the fact you can go and help them with whatever they need, whether it be marketing and be creative in your marketing field or entrepreneurship, opening your own store,” she said.
What exactly she’ll do with a business degree is still up in the air.
She’s doing great in class with a 3.93 grade point average. She’s involved in Drama Club, Latin Club and Math Club.
“She’s a very smart young lady. She has great math abilities,” said Pam Riffle, math teacher at Bluffton High School.
She also played volleyball her freshman year and was a member of the golf team her senior year.
“They needed another girl for the golf team and so I played on the girls varsity golf team this year,” she said. They finished as Northwest Conference Champions.
Out of the classroom, she was field commander for the Bluffton High School Marching Band.
“Sarah, I think, was a born leader. She’s been field commander for two years and I remember when Sarah was in the seventh grade and she comes up and she gave them a one, two, three, four and she started in and she had the pattern and I went back into the choir room and said future field commander. She’s pretty amazing, she takes care of business,” said Bluffton Band Director Dave Syckes.
“My role as field commander over the past two years has really taught me a lot about leadership and how to direct your peers in a respectful manner and to still get along with everybody. That really helped with with things I can go on to do, like within the business field,” Gillen said.
Gillen also plays the trumpet in concert band, pep band and jazz band. She’s also the director’s assistant with the show choir and is involved in chamber choir and symphonic choir.
