Snowy roads double ODOT’s spending in Lima region

LIMA — If you thought this year’s wintry weather felt twice as bad as last year’s, the Ohio Department of Transportation’s budget agrees.

The state spent nearly twice as much money and nearly twice as much salt as it did this year through Thursday, according to a press release from ODOT’s District 1. The district spent $7 million so far this year, compared to $3.7 million last year, using 56,769 tons this year, compared to 29,198 tons last year. It also nearly doubled the number of miles driven for snow and ice, with 747,799 this year compared to 371,777 last year.

The district also used nearly three times as much liquid de-icer so far this winter.

ODOT is responsible for 474 lane miles in Allen County. It spent $1 million to drive 95,375 miles, using 10,505 tons of salt and 35,539 gallons of de-icer.

In Van Wert County, ODOT maintains 393 lane miles. It spent $853,714 to drive 74,410 miles, using 6,963 tons of salt and 191,044 gallons of de-icer.

In Putnam County, ODOT maintains 396 lane miles. It spent $779,000 to drive 90,223 miles, using 5,989 tons of salt and 51,348 gallons of de-icer.

ODOT maintains 309 lane miles in Hardin County. It spent $700,371 to drive 79,021 miles, using 4,061 tons of salt and 28,995 gallons of de-icer.
