LIMA — The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers against potential online dating scams this Valentine’s Day.
Some scammers are now using online dating sites and fake profiles to meet potential victims. After getting someone sufficiently interested in the fake profile, scammers may then ask for money to be sent online for reasons such as plane fares, medical emergencies or financial issues.
Individuals can spot the scam from certain red flags, such as he or she says “I love you” early in the relationship, claims he or she is out of the country with work or the military, asks for money or wants to talk only by email. Scammers may try to cement the fake relationship by sending text messages, flowers or gifts and offering love and companionship.
Victims to such frauds can report relationship scams to the Better Business Bureau at 419-223-7010.
