Alger man dies in fire Sunday

ALGER — A Hardin County man has died after being trapped in a burning house.

The fire at 0529 county Road 80 in Alger was reported to Hardin County 9-1-1 dispatch at 4:21 p.m. Sunday. Hugh Ries, 65, was the only person known to be in the residence at the time of the fire, according to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office.

Ries was believed to be missing after the fire was extinguished, prompting a brief search. However, Ries’ body was found at 2:15 p.m. Monday inside the structure in a crawl space beneath the rubble of the collapsed kitchen.

The Hardin County Fire and Explosion Investigation Team and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is working with the sheriff’s office in investigating the incident. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
