Allen County Special Olympics takes on LPD in hoops game

LIMA —- Allen County’s Special Olympics basketball team, the Sharks, took to the hardwood Thursday night at South Science and Technology Magnet School in a FUNraiser game against the Lima Police Department.

“We always wanted to be part of the community as well as give back, so we decided to play with the Lima Police Department. They are a bunch of great people. They are out every day risking their lives for all of us for our safety and for the community so why not give back and just help for everybody to come together not only as police officers but as athletes together to show everybody in the community that not only Special Olympics is here, but we have great law enforcement too,” said Michael Birchfield, a player and assistant coach.

“We all get to come together, have a lot of fun. It’s a night everybody can enjoy. We’re doing it for a good cause,” said Lima police officer Eric Mericle.

“It’s so exciting that they get to interact with the officers. The officers get to interact with our athletes, the fans get to see fun, it’s a FUNraiser,” said Stacy Crouse, coordinator for Allen County Special Olympics.
